A small 2.9 magnitude earthquake shook residents north of Denver early Friday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The quake occurred at 6:08 a.m., was reported at 6:13 a.m., and was centered approximately three miles southwest of Dacono and approximately five miles deep. People living near the epicenter would have felt very light shaking, according to the USGS intensity map.

As of 8 a.m., 240 responses were filed to the USGS’s website section ‘Did you feel it?‘. Residents of Erie, Brighton and Broomfield also reported feeling the quake.

The USGS said, however, a quake of this size is unlikely to cause any damage.

Prior to Friday’s temblor in northern Colorado, a 3.2 magnitude earthquake was recorded in the early morning hours of Oct. 26, 2024 approximately 8.6 miles north of Trinidad in southern Colorado.

That earthquake had a depth of 5.9 miles.
