Free breakfast and lunch still available at local schools over the summer
School’s out for summer in El Paso County, but multiple schools will still be providing free meals to students.
The Summer Food Service Program, funded federally by the United States Department of Agriculture and administered in the state by the Colorado Department of Education (CDE), provides free breakfast and lunch to Coloradans 18 years or younger at participating sites documented to have a student population where at least 51% qualify for free and reduced lunches.
Sponsoring organizations include public school districts, private schools, nonprofit camps, local, municipal, county or state governments, public or private colleges or universities participating in the National Youth Sports Program and nonprofit organizations. Last year, program sponsors provided more than 1.9 million meals.
In a press release, CDE announced that 635 summer meal sites are open statewide this summer. This year, Colorado Springs D-11, Harrison D-2, Fountain-Fort Carson D-8, Widefield D-3, Hanover D-28 and D-49 are all utilizing the program.
“Many Colorado children rely on their schools for access to food, and our Summer Meals Program provides a critical resource for children and families during the summer months,” said Colorado Education Commissioner Susana Córdova in the release. “We are grateful to our 83 community partners for stepping up to serve them.”
Most of these locations will provide both breakfast and lunch on-site, but dates and times of availability vary. Some locations will only run through June. Others will remain open through August.
Families don’t have to sign up for eligibility and simply need to arrive at the locations when open.
