The man who turned himself in after allegedly kidnapping and killing his wife had all charges bound over for trial at his preliminary hearing Monday.

Stephen Chan, 79, faces three charges in the death of his wife, 54-year-old Jian Chan, and then dumping her body before turning himself in to law enforcement.

Chan’s preliminary hearing began in November but reached its conclusion Monday, with prosecutors spending the bulk of the hearing playing the recordings of Chan’s interviews with law enforcement.

According to previous Gazette reporting, Chan called law enforcement on Sept. 1 to admit to killing his wife, and then turned himself in at the Falcon substation to be arrested the same day.

During the two interviews played to the court Monday, Chan can be heard, often through a translator, telling law enforcement how he kidnapped and tied up his wife, strangled her and drove her to a pond located near Walsen Road, on the far north end of El Paso County, east of Interstate 25. Chan goes on to admit to El Paso County detective Brad Whitehead in an interview that he shot Jian Chan twice and left her in a bush.

Whitehead testified that Chan’s wife was found as he described in the interview, and that law enforcement recovered a revolver from Chan’s car that had been fired two times.

At the conclusion of the interview Judge Linda Billings-Vela opted to bind over all three charges Chan faces for trial: first-degree murder, first-degree assault and second-degree kidnapping.

Chan appeared to court for the preliminary hearing in custody from the El Paso County jail and listened to the entire hearing through a Cantonese translator. Whitehead testified that a large portion of the interviews law enforcement conducted with Chan were done through a Cantonese translator.

Chan faces a $2 million bond to be released from custody and will return to court March 10 for an arraignment.

Judge Billings-Vela stated before the conclusion of the hearing that she expects mental health will be addressed at Chan’s next hearing.
