Ryan McMahon, Rockies’ top infield prospect, learning new position
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — A stiff, new, blond, leather first baseman’s mitt sat on a chair beside Ryan McMahon’s locker Saturday. It was perfect.
“Just got my first first-base mitt, right here,” the third baseman said. The scoop-shaped glove signaled a big leap for the Rockies’ top infield prospect.
McMahon, a 2013 second-round draft pick who turned 21 in December, bopped his way through three professional seasons in the minor leagues behind a smooth line-drive swing.
He seems fast-tracked to the major leagues. But Nolan Arenado is standing in his way. So the Rockies are clearing another path for McMahon, the player they paid a $1.3 million bonus less than three years ago.
