SUNRISE: Woman accused in tow driver’s death due in court

A bond hearing is scheduled at 10 a.m. Friday for Detra Farries, the woman accused of manslaughter in the death of a Colorado Springs tow truck driver.

Farries, 33, is being held in the El Paso County jail with bail set at $50,000 in the Feb. 23 death of Allen Rose, who was dragged to his death after becoming ensnared in a cable while trying to tow Farries’ vehicle.

In a previous hearing, Farris’ public defender argued that her current bail is five times higher than the normal amount for her charges. Rose’s widow has opposed reducing that amount.

Farries is also charged with leaving the scene of an accident and vehicular homicide. Her case is set for a preliminary hearing May 13.

WEATHER

Strong winds are expected to return Friday, and the National Weather Service expects gusts up to 40 mph to accompany mostly sunny conditions in the Colorado Springs area. Highs are expected to be 67 degrees.

Rain is likely Saturday with a high of about 40 degrees. Temperatures should be similar Sunday, although the weather service says there is a 40 percent chance of snow.

Police: Toddler ate marijuana cookies

(AP) — Denver police say a 2-year-old boy was hospitalized after eating cookies that contained marijuana.

Court records show Denitra Vigil, 25, brought her son to the hospital March 19 after he appeared unusually sleepy. Hospital officials said marijuana’s active ingredient, THC, was found in his system.

Records show Vigil said her son climbed on a chair in the kitchen and opened the freezer, where the cookies were kept in a bag. Police say Vigil didn’t know how many cookies the boy ate.

Child Protective Services told police that he was lethargic through the night, but stable.

KMGH-TV in Denver reports that Vigil was arrested on a misdemeanor child abuse charge and released on a $10,000 bond.

Vigil’s attorney declined comment to KMGH-TV Thursday.Bill to require Rx for cold medicines rejected

(AP) — Colorado lawmakers rejected a bill that would require prescriptions to buy common cold medicines like Sudafed in an attempt to block methamphetamine production.

A Senate panel voted 7-2 against the bill Thursday, citing concerns about increased costs and inconvenience to consumers and retailers. Bill sponsor Sen. Betty Boyd had argued that lawmakers should also weigh the costs methamphetamine has on society.

Boyd’s bill sought to require prescriptions for drugs containing certain chemicals needed for meth production. Many of those products are already kept behind the counter and require a customer to ask for them, but this bill would further limit those drugs.

Oregon and Mississippi have already made those cold medicines prescription-only. A fiscal analysis prepared for Colorado lawmakers said the change could cost $275,000 a year in lost sales taxes.Lincoln County wildfire 100 percent contained

(AP) — Officials say a wildfire in Lincoln County that was threatening three houses has been fully percent contained.

Lincoln County sheriff’s officials said Thursday afternoon that the fire in Boyero grew to about 300 acres. They say 11 agencies were battling the fire, which is about 120 miles southeast of Denver. No structures have burned.

Officials say the fire started in three different locations before merging into one. It was possibly human caused.Democrats take 1st step after districting stalemate

(AP) — Democrats have launched a new move in the partisan standoff over new Colorado congressional districts.

Democrats on Thursday proposed a redistricting plan to redraw the state’s seven districts, a week after bipartisan talks broke down. Republicans have already called the Democratic plan unacceptable.

Lawmakers are required to redraw district lines after every census. It’s one of the thorniest jobs politicians have to take up, because both parties try to maximize their chances while guarding against trickery on the other side.

Colorado’s split Legislature this year attempted a bipartisan map drawn by the Republican House and the Democratic Senate. That attempt fell apart last week as partisan tensions flared.

Lawmakers have until May 11 to try to forge a compromise.
