Gunman remains on the loose after west-side slaying

Police are searching for a suspect in a shooting Tuesday that left one man dead inside an apartment on the west side of Colorado Springs.

“It does appear that we do have a shooter out there as we don’t have any person of interest at this time,” police spokeswoman Barbara Miller said. “We’re going to be here all night looking for any suspects.”

About 4:36 p.m., police received a call of shots fired at an apartment building at 2521 King Street.

According to police, a 911 caller reported hearing five shots and a woman screaming.

“When our officers arrived on the scene, they found one adult male deceased” inside an apartment, Miller said. “It appears right now it’s from a gunshot wound, but of course the investigation is going to have to confirm that.”

Miller said investigators were interviewing “several witnesses” at the scene.

“They’re going to be taking their time doing thorough interviews,” she said. “They’re also right now writing up warrants so that they can use that as protocol for the investigation.”

The coroner’s office will determine the manner and cause of death.

“It’s a death investigation right now,” she said.

Fort Carson soldier Williams Barnes, who lives across the street from the scene of the shooting, said he moved his wife, Cassie, and their 4-month-old son, Coby, to King Street about two months ago after a rash of crime on the street where they used to live.

“In October, somebody broke into my car, broke the window, stole a couple of things,” he said. “Well then two weeks later, a couple of people come down our road bashing windows, stealing stuff, slashing tires, catching cars on fire. That’s why we moved over here … Now this.”

Barnes, 19, said he will be deploying to Kuwait in October and worries about leaving his family behind in Colorado Springs.

“I’m probably going to move them back home to Tennessee,” he said. “I feel safe when I’m here with them, but as far as just leaving those two alone, I don’t.”

Police have King Street blocked between Paradise Lane and 25th Street.
