Colorado Springs police cited 13 people and arrested another for driving under the influence of alcohol during a scheduled sobriety checkpoint Friday night and early Saturday.

Police began the checkpoint at 10:45 p.m. near the 3200 block of East Platte Avenue, stopping 910 drivers. Thirty-three drivers were investigated for drunken driving before the checkpoint closed at 2:30 a.m.

Colorado Springs police Sgt. Chuck Potter said the evaluations went smoothly, aside from a man who attempted to drive away after being cited for driving under the influence and was later charged with criminal impersonation.

Near 2:30 a.m., officers stopped the man for driving under the influence and parked his car in a nearby parking lot, instructing him to find another way home. The man then got back in his car and hit a parked car in the parking lot before attempting to drive away, Potter said.

Potter said the man gave police a fake name. He is being held at the Criminal Justice Center.

“He’s a really bad guy to get off the streets,” Potter said.

Representatives from Mothers Against Drunk Driving and Colorado Springs Utilities also assisted with the checkpoint, which is conducted as part of the grant-funded 100 Days of Heat campaign.
