Presidential hopeful Ted Cruz will be in Colorado Springs on April 9 addressing the state assembly, where 34 delegates for the national convention will be selected.

Colorado’s delegates are unbound, meaning those delegates attending the state assembly still have a say in who “wins” the state and will receive the most Colorado votes in Cleveland this summer at the Republican National Convention.

“We could very well be casting the deciding vote this summer at the National Convention,” said Kyle Kohli, spokesman for the Colorado GOP. “We’re poised to be extremely influential at the convention.”

Kohli said all three men still in the race have been invited to attend the event which will be held at the Broadmoor World Arena, 3185 Venetucci Blvd. He said there’s no word yet on whether the front-runner Donald Trump, a billionaire businessman and reality TV star or the third-place runner Ohio Gov. John Kasich will attend.

Cruz, a Baptist, could draw significant support from El Paso County delegates who represent a religious-right voting block in what is Colorado’s version of the bible-belt. The Republican Senator from Texas won a straw poll at Saturday’s county assembly with nearly 71 percent of the delegates.

Because Republican Party leaders decided not to have a state-wide preference poll so Colorado’s delegates could be unbound headed to Cleveland, there is no real clear indication of who is leading the state going into the assembly.

Delegates, who were selected through Colorado’s complex caucus system, will select 13 at-large delegates to send to Cleveland. Delegates chosen to attend the state’s seven congressional district meetings will select three delegates per meeting for a total of 21 national delegates. The deadline to submit paperwork to the state party to become a national delegate was Friday.
