Hats on for a good cause

Local event celebrates derby, raises funds for diabetes

It’s the fastest two minutes in sports, but the splendor and spectacle of the Kentucky Derby lasted much longer for one fundraising group Saturday afternoon.  More than 1,200 miles from Churchill Downs, Colorado Springs’ own “Derby for Diabetes” came out of the gates for the third year running, with proceeds benefiting the American Diabetes Association Children’s Camp.

“We thought it was the best way to gather people together for something fun while bringing attention to a worthy cause, “says Sage Collins, committee co-chair.

Getting attention was not a problem. From bow ties to seersucker’s to the regalia of elaborate hats, the event boasted a colorful display of Southern charm and tradition. Guests were encouraged to don their Derby attire with prizes awarded for best outfits and hats.

Derby attendee, Nancy Trimbly, made her own hat for the occasion. “It only took me a couple of hours. We have a family friend who has juvenile diabetes. I came to last year’s event and have followed their progress. It’s fun and it’s doing a good thing for these kids.”

The American Diabetes Association Children’s Camps offers a week long camp experience to kids with diabetes to educate them and build confidence. Funds raised assist families in sending their children to the camp, located at Eagle Rock, Colorado.

“The first year we did this,” says co-organizer Justin Burns, “we had a week to pull it off and still raised $1000. Last year we raised $3,200. This is our third year and our goal is to double that number both in proceeds and attendance.”
