A suspect in a Colorado Springs police investigation was shot dead Friday night by a uniformed officer at the Greentree Village Apartments on North Carefree Circle near Academy Boulevard, police said.

Police were investigating in the area when the suspect ran across North Carefree Circle into the Greentree apartment complex, where he was shot, said police spokesman Sgt. Dave Edmondson.

The suspect was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Edmondson said.Police did not release the identities of the suspect or the police officer who shot him.

Greentree resident J.D. Courtney said he was standing in his second-floor kitchen about 7:30 p.m. when he heard a commotion outside, then heard three gunshots, followed by yelling.

He said he saw an ambulance take somebody from the scene.
