Brand new Cadillac crossover reveals fresh design, advanced performance

Fresh design, liberal space, lightweight construction and advanced technology all blend seamlessly into one eye-catching, brand new luxury crossover from Cadillac.  The 2017 Crossover Touring (XT5), serves as the foundation for Cadillac’s new crossover series, adding to their ongoing expansion.

Replacing the SRX, one of Cadillac’s best-sellers, the XT5 is nearly the same size providing about 2 more inches in the wheelbase and pushing the wheels out toward the front and rear bumpers opening up an abundance of interior room.

Refocusing on quality materials, such as high-end leather, and swanky new tech features like a rearview mirror that can display the view from a camera mounted on the lift-gate, the XT5 is loaded with promise.

With attention directed on space and craftsmanship, the XT5 delivers a strong, athletic profile with flowing lines and crisp edges, and a front-end styled in the same fashion as their newest sedans.

Based on Cadillac’s philosophy of clean, modern elegance and craftsmanship, the interior of the XT5 enjoys generous comfort and indulgence, with a variety of authentic materials and loads of tech options.

Feeling significantly more spacious than the SRX, the XT5’s interior has plenty of head-, knee- and legroom. Passengers can even recline the rear seatbacks for a little extra space. The second row slides forward and back, broadening either legroom or storage space, and backseat passengers will love having two USB ports for their portable devices.

Behind the second row, cargo space delivers 30 cubic feet, and with the second row folded flat storage space increases to 63 cubic feet. Clever storage opportunities for front passengers includes a pass-through cubby underneath the center console large enough for a handbag.

While Android Auto and Apple CarPlay come standard, drivers have the option to include bonuses such as an eight-way power front passenger seat, front seat power lumbar, heated front seats, driver memory settings, a heated steering wheel, panoramic sunroof, navigation system that comes bundled with a 14-speaker Bose stereo, adaptive cruise control, hands-free power liftgate, a top-view camera system and a head-up display, among much more.

The infotainment system, Cadillac User Interface (CUE), comes with every XT5, and features a quicker processor than former models, responding swiftly to and resulting in a much more user-friendly process. And, rather than all touch sensitive controls, the XT5 offers tangible buttons and controls.

With a 3.6-liter V6 producing 310 horsepower, joined to an eight-speed automatic transmission, the XT5 offers standard front-wheel drive although all-wheel drive is available, and the standard automatic engine stop-start feature boosts fuel economy.

The completely redesigned engine also features Active Fuel Management cylinder deactivation technology, so the engine can automatically switch to a fuel-saving 4-cylinder mode under low or moderate loads.

A new 8-speed automatic transmission is standard in the XT5, which also introduces Electronic Precision Shift, Cadillac’s electronically controlled transmission shifter. Reducing noise and vibration, Electronic Precision Shift offers greater access to cabin space and the storage space beneath the center console.

The lightweight structure of the XT5 is stiffer and stronger than the SRX due to the use of improved materials and advanced design methods. A diagonal “A-frame” front chassis brace in the underbody was added to provide a more solid driver feel and stiffness for the vehicle in turns. In addition, the new suspension includes lightweight components with a MacPherson Strut design in the front and a five-link independent design at the rear.

The optional “twin clutch” all-wheel drive system from Cadillac continuously and automatically delivers optimal traction throughout various conditions. Engineered for strong performance in wet, snowy or icy conditions, it also provides enhanced stability in dry weather.

Standard safety features include antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, front airbags, curtain airbags, driver knee airbag and OnStar support, which includes automatic crash notification, on-demand roadside assistance, remote door unlocking and stolen vehicle assistance.

The XT5 can be optioned with a Driver Awareness package affording forward collision alert, a following distance indicator, lane departure warning and intervention, front pedestrian detection, forward collision mitigation and a seat that vibrates to alert its driver if it senses the vehicle drifting or nearing an obstacle when parking. An additional optional Driver Assist package for Premium Luxury and Platinum trims, reinforces these features with added collision mitigation.

Depending on the trim package, further safety features can include front parking sensors, rear cross-traffic alert and blind-spot monitoring, and the cargo area can come with a management system and a retractable shade.  A towing package, ventilated front seats, LED headlights with front park and cornering lamps,  navigation and 20-inch wheels are just a few of the elevated trim options available.

The 2017 XT5 afforded a noticeably quiet and comfortable ride, veiling Colorado Springs abundance of potholes very efficiently. Further boosting fuel efficiency, working in tandem with the engine stop-start, the V6 will sometimes run on just four cylinders, only noticeable when the digital gauge cluster shows “V4” (when the system is activated).

The first-ever 2017 Cadillac XT5 is a comprehensively upgraded luxury crossover and the cornerstone of a new series of crossovers in the brand’s ongoing expansion.
