Presidential candidate Donald Trump will not be coming to Colorado Springs Saturday for the state GOP assembly, according to Colorado Republican Party Chair Steve House.

“Mr. Trump is not coming,” House said. “A high-level surrogate might come in his place”

House said he has advised the campaign to send someone to fill one of the three presidential speech spots at the convention which will occur moments before delegates vote on who they will send to Cleveland in July to help pick the GOP nominee.

U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz will be at the assembly and Ohio Gov. John Kasich is sending Sen. John Sununu to speak on his behalf.

The statewide assembly will be at the Broadmoor World Arena on Saturday. Colorado will send 37 delegates to the Republican National Convention in Cleveland in July. Six of those delegates have already been selected and will support Cruz. Thirteen more will be selected on Saturday and 15 will be selected on Friday at congressional district assemblies.

It was said local law enforcement and the arena staff were preparing for a Trump visit, but that he hadn’t officially confirmed a visit.

The news that Trump wasn’t coming broke on Wednesday and took many by surprise who thought the front-runner would come and try to win delegates.

“Political campaigns are very careful about what they do,” House said. “It depends on how you look at it, if he believes more time in New York or Pennsylvania is better for him in the long run, then no it’s not a mistake.”

But House said it will cost him delegates.

“He will probably lose some of what he might have gotten,” House said. “He’s a persuasive guy.”
