Arrest made in stabbing death of man found in Monument Creek

Salvador Jose Perez, 38, of Colorado Springs was arrested Thursday night on suspicion of killing Christopher Evan Allen, a 20-year-old whose body was found in Monument Creek on Monday.

Police do not expect any more arrests in the case. Allen’s death was the 19th homicide in Colorado Springs this year. There since have been two more.

Perez is being held in the El Paso County jail without bond. Police are not releasing a photo of Perez because of the ongoing investigaton.

Perez had lived at the Aztec Motel since February, when Homeward Pikes Peak moved its program to house and help homeless tent campers from the Express Inn on Cimarron Street to the Aztec Motel on East Platte Avenue, said Bob Holmes, executive director of Homeward Pikes Peak.

“Sal volunteered daily at the soup kitchen. He did an incredible amount of community service,” Holmes said of Perez. “We’re very sad. It is certainly a tragedy for the family of the young man who was killed.”

The organization conducts background checks on all residents, and Holmes said Perez did not have any prior offenses. Court records confirm Perez’s clean record.

As a requirement of living at the Aztec, Perez was searching for a job but worked almost full time at the soup kitchen, Holmes said.

Holmes was not aware of Perez’s connection to Allen and had not heard from other homeless individuals what happened between the two.

Fall is when you probably feel like closing down the garden, gathering the final harvests and snuggling plants in for the cold months ahead. In fact, though, fall is in many ways a better time for planting from the point of view of a tree or shrub. Photo by AP Photo/Lee Reich
