An arrest warrant was issued Tuesday afternoon in connection with an early morning shooting that left two men dead and sent another two people to the hospital.

Police identified one of the two men who died at the scene as Marquise Bean, 20. The identity of the second man had not been confirmed, police said.

The two men who were injured, Jareem Vanterpool, 21, and Adam Encalade, 26, were hospitalized and were in serious condition Tuesday.

Police issued a warrant for Alonzo Paige, 20, in connection with the shooting. Paige, who goes by the nickname “Babywiz,” has been arrested numerous times and pleaded guilty in July 2010 to “driving with alcohol” and had a deferred sentence, according to court records.

In September 2010 he pleaded guilty to a drug charge; sentencing details were not available Tuesday.

The 4:30 a.m. shooting outside the Timberlane Apartments in the 3900 block of East Bijou Street led to a shutdown of the road for nearly six hours and also temporarily placed five nearby schools on lockdown.

The investigation went on for several hours on the north side of the apartment complex and drew several neighbor onlookers.

George DeWald, who has lived at the apartment complex for six years, said he didn’t hear any shots fired. He was woken up by a call from his boss, who was worried about him when she heard news of the shooting.

This is the first time something like this has happened since he has lived here, he said.

“This is just a random thing, otherwise it would have happened more around here,” he said. “Bad things happen in Briargate too.”

If the men’s deaths are ruled homicides by the El Paso County Coroner’s Office, they would be the second and third homicides of the year for Colorado Springs, compared to two homicides by this time in 2011.
