16-year-old charged as adult in fatal shooting
A 16-year-old has been charged as an adult in the fatal shooting of a 19-year-old after a party on the west side of Colorado Springs.
On Monday, prosecutors filed charges of second-degree murder and attempted murder against Eric Chance Manly in the Nov. 21 shooting outside a home in the 900 block of South 25th Street.
Manly is being held without bond at the Spring Creek Juvenile Detention Center in Colorado Springs.
He is accused of killing Jack Smith, 19 and trying to kill Cody Burns when a brawl erupted as the party was winding down.
Prosecutors also charged him with two counts of menacing, one count of possession of a handgun by a juvenile and two counts of prohibited use of a weapon.
Burns previously told the Gazette that he and Smith were leaving the party when taunts were shouted at them. Somebody yelled they were going to get “a heater,” he said. As they ran to a car, the shooting began.
Manly is scheduled to return to court May 26 for a preliminary hearing on the charges.
