From the WWE to local independent federations, there’s no shortage of pro wrestling news. With our new weekly 3 Count blog, Gazette Sports designer and lifelong pro wrestling fan Derek Kuhn looks at the top three industry stories from the week and gives his take on them. This week’s 3 Count features news on a possible Undertaker return, CSW news and results.

1. CSW entertains at anniversary show

Local independent pro wrestling promotion, Colorado Springs Wrestling celebrated its one-year anniversary show with Halloween Slam-Bash II on Saturday at the Hillside Community Center. About 300 people filled the venue to watch grapplers, including Paul London, Marty “The Moth,” CSW champion Jimbo Lucas, Danger Dean and the Brothers Smith perform.

The crowd was rowdy and spirited, enhancing the show’s contests and pushing the wrestlers to bring their A-game.

After the show, I caught up with “Lucha Underground” producer and performer Paul London. The former WWE Cruiserweight and Tag Team champion spoke highly of the event and the fans who attended.

“I had a blast performing for the fans in Colorado Springs,” London said. “For a show with 11 matches, the fans not only remained energetic and boisterous throughout, but were invested in every match.”

Those matches included a casket match pitting Danger Dean against #IAmTheProvider, whose gimmick seems like a mix between Bray Wyatt and Jim Morrison of The Doors. The match was a solid bout and the wrestlers made good use of the casket, generating a variety of spots including one were both combatants ended up in the closed casket.

Another highlight was the CSW championship match. Jimbo Lucas, the reigning champion, fought Johnny Crash, a punk sporting a blonde mohawk and near insurmountable girth. Lucas’ inability to find a way to grip the heavyset brawler forced the champion to get creative. Lucas used a bar of soap swung from a sock to coldcock Crash, who went down for the count.

London and Marty “The Moth” notwithstanding, my favorite match of the night saw the Brothers Smith face 12 Gauge Order in a tag-team match. During the match, the Brothers Smith, whose gimmick is being a pair of Mormon siblings, performed many high spots, including dual, diving sentons outside the ring to start the match. The crowd was fully behind the Brothers Smith and roared to life when they got the pin-fall victory.

I wasn’t the only one impressed by the bout, London was too.

“The match before intermission between 12 Gauge Order against the Brothers Smith was a lot of fun,” London said. “Lots of action with everyone involved and the Mormons can rock it like Jehovah’s bodyguards — and the crowd loves them.”

Overall, it was a highly entertaining show and it will be interesting  to see how CSW builds on the show.

 2. CSW announces Bar Fights for November

Colorado Springs Wrestling announced Monday that it will invade the Playing Field Sports Bar for in November.

The new venue, at 3958 Academy N No. 112, will host CSW and its “Bar Fights” card at 6 p.m. Nov. 11. Tickets will range between $10-20 depending on seating and time of purchase and can be obtained at www.coloradospringswrestling.com. For information, follow CSW on facebook.

3. Undertaker bound for Survivors Series?

The Sun and other news outlets are reporting The Deadman may be back for one last match. Rumor has it the Undertaker will return to perform at Survivor Series, which is Nov. 19 in Houston –the Undertaker’s hometown.

The Undertaker seemingly retired when he left much of his gear in the ring after losing to WWE golden-boy Roman Reigns at Wrestlemania 33 on April 17 in Orlando.

At the time, there was no confirmation the match was his last, but with impending hip surgery, many postulated it was his final bout. The Sun reported the Undertaker’s former manager Bruce Prichard said the grappler isn’t finished in the ring.

I’ve seen no concrete evidence that the Undertaker will return at Survivor Series, so I believe it’s wishful thinking. Hopefully, I’m wrong because The Deadman is an all-time great.
