Springs robber sentenced to 40 years in prison
A 22-year-old Colorado Springs man was sentenced Friday to more than 40 years in federal prison for armed robbery.
Joshua Bodean Smith was also ordered to pay $895 in restitution to the two victims of his crimes.
His tough sentencing is a result of prosecutors filing charges under the Hobbs Act. The law was passed by Congress in 1946 and allows federal prosecutors to prosecute violent, habitual criminals who commit a robbery in a place of business involved in interstate commerce.
Smith was convicted in November of robbing a Cricket Communications store on South Nevada Avenue on Aug. 31, 2010, and a Burger King at Fort Carson on Oct. 11, 2010.
After his prison time is up, Smith will serve eight years of supervised release,
