17 from Springs qualified for Olympics, 15 others in London mix
Seventeen Colorado Springs-area athletes have qualified for the London Games this summer, with the largest contingent being 10 Olympic Training Center wrestlers, and 15 others are in contention for Olympic berths, according to a study conducted by The Gazette.
It’s the second Olympics for wrestlers Dremiel Byers, Clarissa Chun and Spenser Mango, none of whom hit the podium in 2008 in Beijing. In shooting, it’s the fourth Olympics for Daryl Szarenski, and Matt Emmons has beat thyroid cancer in hopes of adding to the gold medal that he won in 2004 and the silver he claimed in 2008. Fencer Seth Kelsey has qualified for his third Olympics, and triathlete Hunter Kemper is gunning for his fourth.
Gazette research shows that 15 other Colorado residents – 14 are cyclists – have secured spots in London, including triathlete Laura Bennett and mountain bikers Georgia Gould, Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski, Heather Irmiger and Todd Wells. Also from Colorado, swimmer Missy Franklin, hurdler David Oliver, road cyclist Taylor Phinney and beach volleyball player Elaine Youngs remain optimistic for tickets to London. Nine Olympic trials are scheduled the next two months, as the U.S. gears up for another battle against China and Russia in the medal race.
