From the WWE to local independent federations, there’s no shortage of pro wrestling news. With our new weekly 3 Count blog, Gazette Sports designer and lifelong pro wrestling fan Derek Kuhn looks at the top three industry stories from the week and gives his take on them. This week’s 3 Count features news on WWE’s Matt Hardy breaking, Cody Rhodes and the Young Bucks look to book a big arena and Lucha Underground Star Mr. Cisco to work with Colorado Springs Wrestling.

1. Bray Wyatt breaks Matt Hardy

Fans of “Broken” Matt Hardy have reason to rejoice because it seems the future hall of famer’s “Team Extreme” gimmick has been deleted. After losing a match to Bray Wyatt on Monday, Hardy had a post-match conniption yelling delete while performing the broken gesture with his arms as he sat in the corner.

The delete chants were noticeably quieter than when Hardy and his brother, Jeff, returned to WWE after years away, working for Ring of Honor and Impact wrestling.

Hopefully the gimmick hasn’t cooled too much because it was so “deeeelightful.” But I fear time has damaged the gimmick and my faith in WWE creative repairing it is lacking.

When performing for Impact, the delete gimmick was the best thing about the struggling promotion. The Hardy Boys eventually left and took the broken universe to ROH, where they used the gimmick to great effect, becoming even more over.

Yet when the Hardy’s returned to WWE, legal issues regarding the ownership of the broken gimmick prevented the use of it. Anthem, which now owns Impact, contended it owned the gimmick while the Hardy’s asserted otherwise. WWE mostly stayed out of the issue. Negotiations between the two parties made little, if any, progress but with Impact rumored to be hemorrhaging money a deal may have been struck. If not, we might get a new take on an old gimmick. Hardy has previously teased being “woken,” which could be an end-around the legal issues. Let’s hope for pro wrestling it’s broken and not woken.

2. Young Bucks and Cody Rhodes looking to self-finance 10,000-seat wrestling show

The Bullet Club, namely its splinter faction The Elite, have put on a clinic for the past few years on how to leverage social media to become stars without the WWE’s marketing machine. Members of The Elite, The Young Bucks and former WWE wrestler Cody Rhodes have set their sites on filling a 10,000-seat arena in 2018.

The idea for the show started when Twitter user @TheWWEGuy tweeted at Dave Meltzer, asking the longtime pro wrestling journalist if he thought ROH could sell out a more than 10,000-seat arena. Meltzer said, “not anytime soon.”

Melzter’s reply didn’t sit well with the “grandson of a plumber,” who tweeted that with him and the Young Bucks on the card and with three months to promote the event that they could.

Since then, The Elite has searched for a venue they plan to self-finance. Pro Wrestling Sheet reports Chicago, London, San Francisco and Ontario, California are leading candidates for the event.

The website also reports Rhodes and the Young Bucks may partner with ROH to promote and help fill the card, but nothing is official yet.

Rhodes tweeted a scouting trip photo on Nov. 19 that showed him with the Young Bucks and Marty Scurll standing inside an empty arena.

3. Lucha Underground star Mr. Cisco to host CSW wrestling seminar and perform in Bar Fights Vol. 2

Lil Cholo, who performs as Mr. Cisco in Lucha Underground, is set to lace up his boots for Colorado Spring Wrestling on Dec. 9.

“This is actually Lil Cholo’s second time to wrestle here,” CSW promoter Christopher Chavez said. “It’s always an honor to work with this caliber of superstar and I’m really looking forward to his seminar before the show. He (Lil Cholo) has 19 years of experience and he loves to share and teach.”

Outside of Lucha Underground, Lil Cholo has won multiple titles, including the AWS Heavyweight championship, Vendetta Pro Heavyweight championship, AWS Light Heavyweight championship and the NWA Hawaii Tag Team championship.

The wrestling star will teach a pro wrestling seminar from 2 to 4 p.m., Dec. 9 at the Playing Field Sports Bar, 3958 Academy N Suite 112. Tickets are $25 for advance purchase and $30 on Dec. 9.

The Lucha Underground star also will wrestle Danny Gee during the CSW show later Dec. 9. Bar Fights Vol. 2 starts at 6 p.m. at the Playing Field Sports Bar.

Also on the card are CSW champion Jimbo Lucas, Justin Andrews, Dot Mob, Mop Boy, the Hunter and others.
