What’s up? For running pioneer Rick Trujillo, the glory
GOLDEN — Before running up Lookout Mountain on a glorious afternoon last week, mountain running legend Rick Trujillo was reminded of Jim Ryun, the great Kansas miler who was his contemporary when Trujillo competed for the University of Colorado.
Still bewildered a generation later, Trujillo recalled something Ryun said when asked why he didn’t run cross country.
“His words were, ‘I see no reason to see how fast you can run up a mountain,’ ” Trujillo said before scampering 1,100 feet up the Chimney Gulch Trail with remarkably nimble, spry legs for a 66-year-old. “When I read that, I just shook my head.
“That, to me, is the only reason for running.”
