El Paso County Assessor Mark Lowderman is warning residents in the Black Forest fire area that imposters posing as county employees are going after them for information.

“Residents should not provide information to these individuals,” the county said in a press release.

Lowderman said his appraisers were doing property inspections over the last two weeks but finished their work Friday.

The appraisers “won’t be out there again soon except to respond to a request from a property owner,” Lowderman said in a statement.

County spokesman Dave Rose said at least six residents reported being contacted by the imposters.

“Residents have indicated that they were contacted by people asking them questions about their property who claimed to be representatives of the county assessor, and they’re not,” Rose said.

The imposters were asking “assessor-type questions,” such as the size of the home and the number of bedrooms, Rose said. He said officials don’t know what the imposters intended to do with the information.

The assessor’s employees carry government identification and business cards. They also drive government vehicles marked with the words “Assessor’s Department” on the doors.
