New year, new you at the library | Library Limelight

In the start of each new year, I, like many people, make New Year’s resolutions to achieve in the coming year. I reflect on things that I would like to improve in my life or about myself, or things I’m excited about doing. Getting in shape, saving money, spending more time with family, and learning a new language are all popular examples, but goals can vary widely from person to person.

I try to keep my resolutions specific and achievable so that I can reach them without feeling discouraged. Instead of saying that I want to read more books, for example, I will say I want to read a specific (achievable) number of books. In 2023, I resolved to read 200 books, which included an achievable combination of novels, picture books, audiobooks, graphic novels, and other formats. My library card was a key player in achieving this goal, since I couldn’t realistically purchase all 200 of those reads.

For my 2024 resolutions, I’m thinking about other ways Library resources can help me reach my goals. For my creative goals, I plan to make use of Library makerspaces and DIY craft books, and the Library’s book clubs will help me achieve my goal to spend time with new people. I also plan to explore my family heritage through food, and since recipes didn’t get passed down through our family, I can take advantage of the Library’s diverse collection of cookbooks to explore Polish and Jewish foods they might have made themselves.

As someone whose love of community led me to library work, I can’t help but feel excited thinking about the ways that other people can use library resources for their own resolutions. Someone who wants to improve their fitness, for example, can access fitness videos on Kanopy, listen to music during workouts using the Freegal app, and attend yoga classes at the library. Anyone resolving to learn a new skill or hobby can take advantage of no-cost LinkedIn Learning courses, borrow hobby and DIY books, or attend related Library programs.

Aiming to save money this year? Easy! Get a library card! Borrow books, eBooks, and audiobooks instead of buying every book you plan to read. Cancel your least-used streaming service and watch TV shows and movies on Hoopla and Kanopy. Try new board games and video games before you buy to make sure you love them enough to own.

I am delighted to report that between the well-known and lesser-known library resources and services, the possibilities for your 2024 goals are nearly endless. I know that I’ll be able to reach my goals with help from my library card. Whatever your goals are for the new year, I hope that you swing by the library or visit ppld.org/new-you to find out how your Library can help you achieve.
