Avalanche trade away former first-round pick in prospect swap
The Oskar Olausson era in Colorado is over, though it’s fair to say it never really began.
The Avalanche on Friday announced they had traded the 22-year-old Olausson to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for forward Danil Gushchin. Olausson was drafted by the Avalanche in the first round in 2021 and struggled to find consistency as a professional, putting up 66 points in 163 games with the Colorado Eagles. That led to him playing just four NHL games over the last three seasons.
Gushchin, a 23-year-old listed at 5-foot-8, has struggled to stick at the NHL level, putting up just five points in 18 career NHL games. He has been a significant contributor at the AHL level, as he has essentially been a point-per-game player for San Jose’s minor league squad. That’s likely where he’ll fit in with the Avalanche.
After the trade was completed, the Avalanche signed Gushchin to a one-year contract.
