Badminton

Fullerton, Calif.: Beiwen Zhang fell just short in her quest to win a second U.S. Open title, falling to 2012 Olympic gold medalist Li Xuerui of China in the championship game on Sunday.

Zhang won the first game, 26-24, but Li, who is coming back from a knee injury suffered in the semifinals of the Olympic Games Rio 2016, gathered momentum to claim the final two games.

Much like the first game, the second started off close and was tied, 10-10, but unlike the first game, in which Zhang went on a run, this time it was Li. The two-time Olympian scored 11 of the next 16 points and won the game, 21-15. The third game went in similar fashion, with Li surging ahead after the score was tied, 8-8, en route to a 21-11 win.

Zhang had to fight back in the semifinals against reigning U.S. Open champ Aya Ohori of Japan in order to make Sunday’s final.

Men’s Volleyball

Hoffman Estates, Ill.: The U.S. Men’s Volleyball Team swept the weekend’s series and vaulted from fourth to second place in the FIVB Volleyball Nations League standings, finishing off the perfect week with a win over Iran, 29-27, 25-20, 26-24.

Playing on home soil, Team USA also defeated Poland, which was No. 1 in the league last week, and Serbia. The U.S. men now head to Italy for the final three games of the preliminary round, and will face top-ranked France, Russia and the host nation. France and the U.S. each have 10 wins and two losses, though France has 30 points to Team USA’s 29.

Team USA has not lost a set in the United States since July 2016. The Americans sit in second place in the standings and their performance helped their chances of finishing among the top six teams that will advance to the final round beginning July 4.
