The Colorado Fraternal Order of Police, in a letter to Gov. John Hickenlooper, is calling for the resignation of Denver Mayor Michael Hancock, along with a state investigation into allegations of “corruption and unethical behavior” in the city’s Department of Public Safety.

“Denver is at a crossroads in its public safety decision making. With the level of violence increasing against both citizens and law enforcement officers (both in Denver and statewide), the Fraternal Order of Police believes it is critical for Denver to change course toward ethical leadership that realistically recognizes the public safety challenges facing both the community and the officers who serve that community daily — often at great risk,” said the letter, in part, signed by Stephen Schulz, President of the state lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police.

Hancock has come under scrutinyfor sending suggestive text messages to a police officer on his security detail during his first year in office, behavior he now acknowledges as inappropriate six years after the detective alleged she suffered sexual harassment.
