Locals will turn a stretch of open sky into a sea of soaring fabric and string this Saturday, as families gather to watch kites disguised as dragons, rainbows, superheroes and more take flight during the El Paso County Kite Festival. 

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., bright colors and creative designs, with a little help from Colorado’s famous winds, will take center stage — if the stage was hundreds of feet overhead. 

The free family-friendly event is open to the public, with a kite competition available for individuals under 18, including categories like Best Homemade Kite, Most Elaborate Kite and Judge’s Choice. 

Built around one of childhood’s simplest pleasures, the event hosted by the El Paso County Parks Department was recognized with a 2024 National Association of Counties Achievement Award, with over 1,000 people in attendance that year. 

Now, on this Father’s Day weekend, the festival will continue to prove that some of the best entertainment can come from a little wind and a lot of imagination. 

“The Kite Festival is a wonderful way for families to enjoy the outdoors and celebrate Father’s Day weekend,” County Commissioner Carrie Geitner said. “As we prepare to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary and Colorado’s 150th anniversary, this event is an opportunity to show your patriotism with red, white and blue. It is also an opportunity to remember the important role families and fathers play in our individual lives and in the strength of our community and nation.”
