Weather alert: Thunderstorm, dust storm warnings issued in southeast Colorado

Storms rolling through southeast Colorado on Tuesday afternoon produced strong winds, hail and dust storms, according to the National Weather Service in Pueblo.

They began within an hour of meteorologists issuing a severe thunderstorm watch across nearly all of southeastern Colorado, except the Pikes Peak region, until 10 p.m. Tuesday.

Despite being outside the watch area, much of Pueblo County, including its county seat, was simultaneously under a dust storm warning and a severe thunderstorm warning around 2 p.m. Local storm reports to the Weather Service recorded nearly 60 mph wind gusts.

The northeast-moving thunderstorm briefly had a warning as it stretched into a small portion of rural southeastern El Paso County before expiring.

By 4 p.m., numerous other severe thunderstorm and dust storm warnings had been issued across Baca, Crowley, Las Animas and Otero counties.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Weather Service in Pueblo forecast risks of 60 mph winds from storms from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Pikes Peak region through part of Crowley and Otero counties. Baca, Bent, Kiowa, Prowers and eastern Las Animas counties were expected to see hazardous wind gusts up to 80 mph between 1 and 9 p.m.

The storms come amid much of the region being under a red flag warning on Tuesday, and set to be under a fire weather watch on Wednesday.

High temperatures in the 90s are expected to continue for a few more days in the Pikes Peak region this week. Colorado Springs is forecast to feel a break from those temperatures on Thursday and into the weekend.
