Child drowns in Cherry Creek Reservoir Saturday
A child was pulled from Cherry Creek Reservoir on Saturday night after going under the water several hours earlier, parks and wildlife officials say.
Witnesses said that the victim was initially with another child on a float near the Cherry Creek State Park swim beach around 4 p.m. Saturday, according to a news release from Colorado Parks and Wildlife. At about that time, the other child left the float to walk back on the shore while the victim continued floating into deeper water.
About a half hour later, the victim went under the water, according to the release. A South Metro Fire Rescue Dive team, which was training in a different part of the park, responded to the scene; they were later joined by the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office.
The victim was recovered by Colorado Parks and Wildlife marine recovery staff around 10:20 p.m. Saturday, according to the release. Neither child was wearing a life jacket on the float.
The Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office will identify the child and determine their age.
