Road closures are expected to begin Sunday along a major stretch of Dublin Boulevard as crews wrap up construction on a project that will widen the street from two lanes to having two lanes going in both directions, separated by a raised median.

The Colorado Springs Public Works Department warned drivers to expect closures on both the east and west side of the intersection of Dublin and Marksheffel Road from Sunday night until Friday evening.

The road improvements along Dublin between Fieler Drive and Marksheffel Road have been ongoing for more than a year.

Construction has improved the sidewalks along the street and added a traffic light at the intersection with Issaquah Drive that is set to begin working Sunday.

The roughly $15 million project is being funded through the Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority’s voter-approved sales tax for road improvements.

City Councilmember Roland Rainey posted on Facebook earlier this week that “while this configuration may cause some frustration with traffic, this accelerated progress to completion will get traffic flow back to normal” in a matter of days.

Several businesses near the intersection of Dublin and Marksheffel told The Gazette last summer that the previous road closure caused a roughly 30% drop in customers. The city said access to businesses will be maintained during the final phase of construction.
