Fort Carson soldier dies during ‘routine training activity’ in Iraq, military officials say

A Fort Carson soldier died Sunday in a training-related incident at Erbil Airbase in Iraq, the Defense Department announced Thursday.

Sgt. Devin A. Seibel, 26, of Robinson, Texas, was a critical care flight paramedic assigned to the Air Ambulance Company, 2nd Battalion, 4th Combat Aviation Brigade, based at Fort Carson.

Lance Cpl. James Freeman, 29, also died during the “routine training activity,” the British Ministry of Defense announced Wednesday.

The incident is under investigation, according to the Defense Department.

In a statement, Col. Cameron Gallagher, commander of the 4th Combat Aviation Brigade, said Seibel was committed to professional excellence, and his loss will be deeply felt.

“Sgt. Seibel’s positive impact as an exceptional non-commissioned officer, friend, and husband was felt by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him,” Gallagher said.

The 4th Combat Aviation Brigade headed to the Middle East in August 2025 to support Operation Inherent Resolve, a mission focused on defeating the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

Members of the brigade were featured in pictures during Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth’s visit to the Middle East in April. Hegseth was in the region to visit troops during the conflict with Iran before the ceasefire started.

Seibel, who enlisted in the Army in May 2017, deployed to Afghanistan in 2020 and 2021, his service record shows.

“May God comfort all his family and friends,” Robinson High School, Seibel’s alma mater, posted in an online memorial Thursday.
