With a plea deal still on the table, a tentative trial is scheduled for a woman accused of driving into and subsequently killing a retired Calhan School District superintendent while impaired.

Colorado State Patrol investigators allege in court documents that Amy Dalton, 37, was driving a Subaru when it went airborne and struck 79-year-old Robert “Bob” Selle while he was mowing his lawn during the afternoon of Aug. 24. She is facing vehicular homicide, DUI and reckless driving charges.

Court documents previously reported on by The Gazette state that Dalton did not steer evasively or brake before the crash. It also states she was under the influence of an unspecified amount of at least two substances, the names of which were redacted.

Dalton’s car reportedly traveled about 200 feet at around 60 mph on the grass and dirt shoulder of the “straight and flat” North Calhan Highway in eastern El Paso County before becoming airborne after hitting a post and the northern edge of a driveway. The vehicle then rammed through a barbed wire fence, crashing into Selle and his lawnmower before tumbling onto its roof.

Dalton and her legal counsel, Austin Miller, appeared in El Paso County court Tuesday to ask Judge Michael McHenry for more time on negotiations, though the 4th Judicial District judge urged that they must schedule a trial in case those fall through.

Attorney Richard Hansen indicated the prosecution is looking at 6 to 8 years of jail time for any negotiated plea deal.

If a trial does happen, it is scheduled for the week of Oct. 12. A motions hearing is also set for Aug. 18, when both sides plan to update the court on any negotiations.

Miller also indicated that he will file more motions, which he said may “hinder” plea deal conversations.

‘Community was the center of his life’

A native of Oakland, Calif., Selle and his parents moved to Colorado in 1959, according to an online obituary published in The Denver Gazette.

He met his wife, Donna, at Middle Park High School in Granby, and they married shortly after high school in 1967.

After marriage, Selle pursued a degree in teaching at the University of Northern Colorado. He got his first job as an industrial arts teacher in California after graduation.

Selle and his wife eventually returned to Colorado, moving to Wray in 1972 and had two children – Lisa and Christopher.

The obituary says Selle became a “pillar of the Wray community,” starting as an art teacher before moving into roles as a wrestling coach and football radio announcer. Eventually, he became Buchanan Middle School’s principal and then the district superintendent.

“Community was the center of his life,” the obituary says. “He was always willing to lend a helping hand, and he was extremely gifted at building and fixing things.”

In 1998, the family moved to Calhan. Selle became the district’s superintendent that year and held the position until 2006, when he retired, according to the obituary and a social media post from Calhan School District RJ-1.

The post says he “gave generously” to the community through the Lions Club, the Methodist Church, the Calhan Pantry and “so much more.”

Selle is survived by his wife, children, their spouses and his five grandchildren.
