Pueblo shooting victim, 18, ID’d; teenager turns himself in

The victim of a fatal shooting on Pueblo’s east side on Monday was identified as 18-year-old Desi Ortiz, the Pueblo County Coroner’s Office announced.

In an update to their news release on Monday, Pueblo police said a 17-year-old boy turned himself in later in the day for the early afternoon shooting in the 2100 block of Oakshire Lane.

The shooting was first detected by the department’s ShotSpotter system and quickly followed by several 911 calls about a gunshot victim, police previously announced. Emergency responders intercepted a vehicle the Ortiz was in several blocks away to provide transport to the hospital.

Ortiz later died in the hospital as a result of their injuries.

The shooting had prompted Pueblo Police Department and Pueblo School District 60 officials to secure the perimeter of East High School, which was a few blocks away.

This marks the ninth homicide in Pueblo so far this year, four more than this time last year.
