Local schools to offer free meals to students over summer

The summer season is here, but that doesn’t mean the free meals students enjoyed during the school year are ending.

Starting Wednesday, Coloradans 18 years or younger will have access to participating sites serving breakfast and/or lunch at no cost, Monday through Friday, during the summer months.

The Summer Food Service Program is federally funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and, in the state, administered by the Colorado Department of Education. It provides free meals at participating sites with documented student populations where at least 51% qualify for free and reduced-price lunches.

Sponsoring organizations include public school districts, private schools, nonprofit camps, local, municipal, county or state governments and nonprofit organizations.

Most locations will provide both breakfast and lunch on-site, but dates and times of availability vary. Some locations will only run through June. Others will remain open through July.

Families don’t have to sign up for eligibility and can arrive at the locations when open.
