At an unassuming shop in the heart of downtown Colorado Springs, doughnuts are out and games and ice cream are in.

Founder and owner Adam Stepan on Friday quietly opened the second location of his game store, Dice Guys, and ice creamery, Ice Guys, at 29 E. Moreno Ave. in downtown Colorado Springs, the former home of Dad’s Donuts.

“We are really excited,” he told The Gazette just a day before the soft opening, taking a break from unpacking boxes and arranging the store. “It feels like such the right thing. Things really fell into place.”

Stepan had been looking for other spaces where he could expand his business, but none felt right. Within seconds of touring the space at 29 E. Moreno, a turnkey property that allowed him to open within weeks, he knew it was the perfect fit.

“That was a sign to me. The universe said, ‘This is what we’ll do,’” Stepan said.

An extension of the gaming store and ice cream shop he opened in Old Colorado City in phases — Dice Guys in 2020, then Ice Guys a few years later in 2023 — Stepan is leaning more heavily into the ice cream portion of the business at the new 1,250-square-foot downtown location.

Ice Guys offers 20 flavors of handcrafted ice cream, with options like Tahitian vanilla and salty dog chocolate as well as eclectic creations like basil with blackberry swirl, pina colada and dairy-free selections.

Stepan uses natural ingredients including real sugar and flavoring, without extracts, to offer a higher-quality ice cream his customers won’t find elsewhere, he said.

Guests can also choose from a selection of board and card games for purchase, as well as plushies, toys and handbags.

The game selection at his downtown location won’t be as robust as it is in Old Colorado City, and he likely won’t host tournament play — the game space is a little smaller on Moreno Avenue — but he’ll offer a “refined list” of the most popular board and card games people seek out. Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride, Exploding Kittens, Magic the Gathering and Pokémon top the list, he said.

Stepan also plans to offer coffee and breakfast options in the new location, but there will be no speakeasy bar here. Stepan’s Fifty-Niner speakeasy operates in the back of his Old Colorado City game store.

Over Memorial Day weekend, the Moreno Avenue shop is expected to be open from about 4-11 p.m. daily before expanding operating hours. After the holiday, Stepan plans to open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekdays and from 7 a.m. to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.

A grand opening is planned for June.
