Air Force baseball sees heartbreaking end to Mountain West tournament run as 7-run lead disappears

Air Force baseball’s season ended when a seven-run lead evaporated in an 11-8 loss to top-seeded San Diego State late Saturday with a shot at the Mountain West tournament championship round at stake.

The Falcons led 8-1 heading into bottom of the sixth before the Aztecs started their comeback, which was highlighted by a three-run home run from Jabin Trosky in the sixth and a go-ahead two-run double from Tony Gwynn Mountain West Player of the Year Jake Jackson in the eighth.

The third-seeded Falcons had started the day with an 11-1 run-rule victory over No. 5 New Mexico in Mesa, Ariz., advancing to face the Aztecs.

San Diego State will face No. 1 Washington State in Sunday’s championship round. The Cougars would capture the title with one win, while the Aztecs would need to win twice after coming through the loser’s bracket.

In the morning victory over the Lobos, the Falcons received eight innings of two-hit ball from Ethan Dillinger, who struck out five with no walks, and two home runs from left fielder Luke Elmore. The team collected 19 hits and stole five bases.

The Falcons set a tournament record with 17 stolen bases, but San Diego State catcher Zach Justice threw out three would-be base stealers on Saturday night.
