The most recent Fort Carson soldier to die in conflict, Staff Sgt. Benjamin Pennington was honored Thursday during the Memorial Day ceremony on the base.

Colorado Springs Mayor Yemi Mobolade told all those who are bearing the weight of Pennington’s loss that they are not alone during the service at Founders Field

“Colorado Springs grieves with you,” he said.

Pennington died March 8 following an attack on March 1 at Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia during Operation Epic Fury. The 26-year-old served with the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command’s 1st Space Brigade.

Fort Carson’s commander Maj. Gen. Patrick Ellis also honored Pennington and all of the 4th Infantry Division soldiers who have died through the decades since its formation 1917.

“We honor the fallen from the earliest battles of our history to the ongoing missions around the world,” he said.

Fort Carson’s service starts a long holiday weekend of events to honor those who have died in the defense of our country.

Volunteers are invited to place flags with Pikes Peak Hospice and Palliative Care and Flags for Fallen Vets 9-10 a.m. Saturday at Pikes Peak National Cemetery. Online registration is required and can be found at flagsforfallenvets.com

The public is invited to welcome home veterans from their Honor Flight trip to Washington, D.C., 7:30-8 p.m. on Sunday at Colorado Springs Christian School, 4855 Mallow Road.

The 8th Annual Angel Run will start at 8 a.m. on Monday at Red Leg Brewing. The 5K and 10K races require registration and participants should arrive early. The proceeds from the races benefit Angels of America’s Fallen, a nonprofit that supports the children of military service members and first responders who have died.

A Memorial Day ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Monument Cemetery at 800 8th St. in Monument.

A service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Pikes Peak National Cemetery. Parking is limited at the cemetery and residents are encouraged to carpool.

A ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Evergreen Cemetery.

The Teller County service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Woodland Park Cemetery.
