9 more bodies ID’d from Davis Mortuary; 6 remain unidentified

Nine additional bodies allegedly found improperly stored by then-Pueblo County Coroner Brian Cotter and his brother have been identified with DNA analysis, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation announced Wednesday.

A total of 18 bodies of people who died between 2010 and 2012 have been identified by Dr. Gregory Grahek, Cotter’s replacement as coroner, and Fremont County Coroner Randy Keller since the discovery of remains during an inspection of the mortuary in August.

Cotter resigned from his position as coroner days after the discovery, a position he was thrice elected to and up for reelection in November.

The CBI is continuing to use DNA databases to identify the remaining six bodies found in the mortuary, according to the news release. The agency is also investigating the “multiple” containers of human remains that represent an unknown number of individuals.

Investigators are attempting to utilize DNA to build family trees and find distant relatives with forensic genetic genealogy. The nine identifications announced on Wednesday used the same method.

Davis Mortuary was co-owned by Chris Cotter, Brian’s brother.

Neither Cotter has been charged with crimes in the investigation, but the CBI is continuing to work with the 10th Judicial District Attorney’s Office on the case.

A spokesperson with the CBI told The Gazette the agency is no longer seeking tips in the nine-month investigation and hopes to advance the case when all bodies are identified.

By January, CBI had received more than 2,200 tips over the phone and online, according to previous Gazette reporting.
