Widespread rain, snow expected across southern Colorado
Rain and snow have already touched down across parts of the Pikes Peak region Tuesday, and meteorologists say more is coming tonight.
The chance for rain and snow showers will increase come Tuesday evening, according to Alan Rose, a meteorologist with Gazette news partner KOAA. More widespread precipitation will continue into Wednesday morning. Snow levels will drop down to around 8,000 feet, with light accumulations expected in Teller County and northern El Paso County.
The National Weather Service’s office in Pueblo is forecasting between a quarter and a half inch of rain near the Colorado Springs Airport, the city’s official measuring station, come Tuesday night. The airport recorded 0.03 inches earlier this morning.
Weather Service Meteorologist Mark Wankowski said rain and snow will be “on and off” Tuesday. Northern El Paso County has already hit the ground running, with Palmer Lake recording almost an inch of snow overnight. Further south, the town of Rye also recorded some light snow, Wankowski said.
Probabilistic data from the Weather Service shows areas west of Colorado Springs could get between 1-4 inches of snow starting Tuesday and headed into Friday morning.
By Thursday, the Weather Service says there will be chances for severe thunderstorms in the region, especially for the eastern plains along the Kansas border.
Pikes Peak is also seeing some love. According to Wankowski, America’s Mountain could see about 3-6 inches of snow later tonight.
Wankowksi said the precipitation is “very good timing.”
In Colorado Springs, the average precipitation for May is 1.99 inches. Wankowski said the city is at .33 for this month so far.
“It is slowly helping drought conditions, but we definitely need more (precipitation),” Wankowski said.
A Tuesday morning freeze warning was in effect for northern El Paso County, as well as a frost advisory for Colorado Springs, Pueblo, the Interstate 25 corridor and portions of the eastern plains. The cold is expected to drop temperatures into the upper 20s to mid 30s for the region later tonight, according to the Weather Service.
“Towards late morning to early afternoon, we’re expecting a few sunbreaks, but it will be brief,” Rose said.
Here is an extended forecast from the Weather Service for the rest of the week in Colorado Springs:
