Air Academy’s Landry Frost leads 4A state girls golf individual race, Kadets’ team in second

MONTROSE – Despite an improved weather forecast, The Bridges will still be under a Frost warning on Tuesday.

With conditions about as miserable as any in recent memory, the field at the 4A girls state golf tournament on Monday still let defending champion Landry Frost take a one-shot lead into the second and final round of the championship. And she did it the entire time with a smile on her face.

The Air Academy sophomore put together a 3-over-par 74 to take the Day 1 lead. She’s one shot ahead of Ponderosa sophomore Kaylee Meyering. Riverdale Ridge’s Brynn Balliet is the only other player in the field to shoot under 80.

“I just had a really good mindset,” Frost said. “With the rain, I kind of thought this was fun.”

The worst of the rain came down around 8 a.m., just 40 minutes before Frost was due to tee off.

With the downpour still in effect, and tournament organizers opting not to pull the players off the course, she piped a drive down the fairway of the par-5 first hole. From 215 yards out, she pulled a 4-hybrid and landed 10 feet from the pin before sinking the putt to start the day off with an eagle.

“She’s a pretty good player,” coach Jason Catron said. “She was pretty pumped and didn’t care about the elements this morning.”

She gave back a stroke on the par-3 fourth, but got it back with a birdie on the par-4 ninth. Overall, she played the par 5s at 3-under on the front.

The back was a different story. By the time she made the turn, the rain had stopped and the sun had come out. But temperatures were still low and the wind was still whipping around The Bridges.

Frost had a stretch of making three bogeys in five holes. Heading to the par-3 16th, she just needed to steady the ship to get into the house with a lead.

She avoided near disaster as the ball smacked into the water in front of the 16th green. But rather than the ball, and Frost’s lead, sinking to the bottom of the hazard, the heavy tailwind kicked onto the bank where she casually got up and down for a much-needed par.

Her lone double bogey came on 17, but all in all, her round put her in an ideal spot heading into Tuesday’s final round.

“The wind really picked up (on the back),” Frost said. “And in the wind, your misses are going to be a little bit bigger. That’s what happened a couple of times where I played for my miss and I just missed it more.”

The Kadets are sitting in second place as a team with a cumulative score of 268. Ponderosa has the team lead by seven strokes.

Hadley Fox and Katelyn Markley shot matching 97s and Lila Hickey shot 100. All four players are in the top 35 on the individual leaderboard.

But as the forecast shows improvement with the weather tomorrow, the Kadets are in a prime spot to get out and chase down the first girls golf championship in team history.

“It doesn’t matter what player (steps up),” Catron said. “We’re sticking to our plan and sticking to our strategy. They’re going to come out with confidence tomorrow and they’re going to play better.”

Falcon’s Brooklyn Kinder is sitting in the top 10 on the leaderboard after firing a 90 on the day. She played her last four holes 1 over and will try to carry that momentum into the second round.

Cheyenne Mountain is in ninth place as a team. Evangeline McFarland led the Red-Tailed Hawks with a 99. Camryn Moberly, Leah Glad, Maya Hicks and McFarland are all within four shots of each other.

Rampart has two girls in the top 30 as Rowan Huls shot 94 and Scarlett Ford finished with a 101. Coronado’s Jessie Weeks shot a 111 and Mesa Ridge’s Sydney Colen finished with a 113. The second round of the 4A girls golf tournament begins at 8 a.m. on Tuesday.

And with a one-shot lead and better conditions, the tournament field is under a Frost warning until further notice.
