Multiple shots fired in Jackson Creek early morning May 16, police respond
Three suspects have been taken into custody following an early morning shooting in Monument’s Jackson Creek neighborhood which left a family shaken after approximately 15 rounds were fired into their home while several people, including children, were inside, according to Monument police and the homeowner.
The shooting occurred just before 3 a.m. May 16 in the Jackson Creek area. Monument Police Department said in a statement, although numerous rounds struck the residence, no one was injured.
Homeowner Kendra Tolowski, 40, resides at the property with her family, said she initially thought the gunfire was part of a dream.
“I thought I was dreaming at first,” Tolowski said. “It sounded like somebody was beating on our door downstairs. Then my kids came upstairs screaming and crying, telling me we were being shot at.”
Tolowski said bullets struck multiple areas of the property, the majority of which was concentrated on the home’s bedrooms. One also hit her pickup truck parked in front of the home. One also projected through the garage and came into the home.
Several family members were asleep inside the residence at the time of the shooting, Tolowski said. She, herself, said she had unknowingly avoided sleeping directly in the line of fire after moving to a different side of her bed in preparation of hosting a graduation party later that day.
“I never sleep on that side,” Tolowski said. “I did that night because I had laundry piled on the other side of the bed.”
MPD stated investigators “quickly developed leads and immediately began pursuing those involved,” but delayed publicly releasing information because of “the active nature of the investigation and ongoing enforcement efforts.”
Since that time, three of the four involved individuals have been taken into custody, the department stated. The investigation remains active as detectives continue efforts related to the remaining suspect and any additional related charges.
Tolowski said she believes the incident stemmed from a personal dispute involving her 21-year-old son and a young woman he had recently cut off contact with. Tolowski said her son, Ritchie, had received threats shortly before the shooting.
“They were threatening that they were going to come here and shoot up the house and kill Richie,” she said.
Tolowski said neighbors provided Ring camera footage which allegedly captured a vehicle driving by moments before the shots were fired. She said police officers responded within minutes, including an officer already patrolling nearby who heard the gunfire.
The Monument Police Department credited the rapid progress in the investigation to “the immediate response of officers, focused investigative efforts, and strong coordination with partner agencies.”
Police also specifically thanked the Colorado Springs Police Department for its assistance. The suspects arrested were at an apartment complex in Colorado Springs where they were apprehended.
“Their responsiveness, collaboration, and support played a significant role in advancing this investigation quickly,” the MPD stated.
While rumors about the shooting circulated online over the weekend, Tolowski strongly denied speculation tying her family to criminal activity.
“I’m not a drug dealer,” she said. “I’m a hard-working single mom trying to raise my kids. We’re just like every other family.”
Tolowski, who has lived in the Monument area since 2016, works as a parent care provider. She said the emotional impact of the shooting has been overwhelming for the family and neighborhood.
“It makes me sick,” Tolowski said. “It’s the last thing I needed on top of everything else for everybody to be judging me now.”
The investigation remains ongoing. Police have not yet publicly identified the suspects or announced potential charges. MPD has not officially released any information regarding the motive of the assault.
