LAKEWOOD – Thiago Roberts has topped the charts at state track multiple times as part of a group.

Now he’s got multiple No. 1s as a solo artist.

The Harrison senior blazed to titles in the 3A boys’ 400 meter (47.63 seconds) and, a few hour later, the 200 (21.49) on Saturday in the Colorado Track and Field State Championships, adding the individual titles to four relay golds on résumé.

With relay victories in the 4×200 on Friday and the 4×100 on Saturday, Thiago finished this year’s meet with four gold medals.

“A perfect day,” he said.

The relays both improved 3A records already set by Roberts and his Harrison teammates, while his times in the 200 and 400 would have won each of Saturday’s finals except 5A, where only the top three finishers topped him in both races.

“It’s all you,” Roberts said of the difference between relays and individual races. “You’re by yourself. You don’t have anybody to cover your faults to run fast if you’re feeling bad. It’s you from the wake up, from the block, from the gun to the finish line.

“This means so much to me. This is something I would dream about from my freshman year and it’s finally come to fruition. It’s proving to myself that I’m worth all the time and the money that was spent on me to get here.”

Roberts pointed particularly to the role his father, Scott, has played in his development, serving as his personal trainer and coach.

“He’s always been the first one to every track meet, it didn’t matter if it was Denver, Pueblo, wherever. He’s always been there for me,” Roberts said. “It means a lot for me and my family for me to be at this stage right now.”

Roberts executed his plan perfectly in the 400. He wanted to go strong for 150 meters, cruise a bit, then finish strong. That’s what helped him past Denver West’s Ernest Fields, the leader coming out of the prelims who finished second at 47.89.

James Irwin’s Dominik Browne (fourth at 49.06) and The Classical Academy’s Caden Maddox (fifth at 49.33) also finished in the top five, representing the Colorado Springs area.

The 200 was simply a 21.49-second explosion of speed.

Now, Roberts’ plan is to run at the University of Colorado.

He’ll study business with an emphasis on project management.

“I think business is going to be one of the most viable majors to use, especially with the growth in AI taking jobs and what not. I think business is going to stick around and I’ll be able to use that to be successful in my future.”

It certainly sounds like Roberts has a plan to continue to strive on his own.
