Fountain-Fort Carson’s Amiyah Nash finds joy, contentment in runner-up finish in 5A discus
LAKEWOOD — Amiyah Nash didn’t need to wrap her time as an athlete with a gold bow. Silver will work just fine.
The Fountain-Fort Carson senior set a personal best twice on Thursday morning, placing her in the lead entering the finals of the 5A girls discus at the CHSAA track and field championships. She placed second, and she was absolutely great with that.
“I feel very happy,” said Nash, who threw 128 feet, 5 inches in the morning session. Kaia Bennett, the event favorite, won for Rocky Mountain with a toss of 130 feet, 9 inches. “I told myself at the beginning of the year that I would place top three, so that’s what my goal was.”
Did holding the lead change that?
No.
“I want everyone else to succeed. So watching everybody PR and go up in place makes me happy as well.”
It’s rare to find an athlete as contented as Nash. She is pleased with her progression — a state qualifier as a sophomore when she “threw it over the fence,” to fifth place last year to runner-up as a senior. And she’s fine with walking away from the sport.
Nash will be studying nursing at Northern Colorado next season and has no plans of joining the track and field team.
“I want to be able to focus on my career and take this accomplishment as something I’m really proud of.”
