Palmer Ridge’s Nathan Moller steals the show at state track & field with 6-foot-10 high jump
LAKEWOOD — Nathan Moller visualized a best-case scenario for his final state meet.
Reality was even better.
The Palmer Ridge senior and UCCS signee cleared the pack at 6 feet, 7 inches to secure the 4A boys high jump crown. Then he took the bar up to 6 feet, 10 inches and, with the full support of Jeffco Stadium, cruised over that bar as well.
“I was fired up,” Moller said. “I came down off the mat and didn’t know what to think. I went to teammates, went to coaches. I was just celebrating. It was really fun.
“This was perfect.”
Better than perfect. He figured 6 feet, 7 inches, which had stood as his previous personal best, would be the winning mark. He pictured that in his mind. And that proved to be correct. A group of seven jumpers — including Moller’s familiar foes, Coronado’s Lyrik Smith and Mesa Ridge’s Josiah Garcia — cleared 6 feet, 5 inches.
After missing on his first try, Moller was the only one of the seven to make it over at 6-7.
“In my head it wasn’t complicated because I’ve done it before, and I just wanted it to come through,” he explained. “I was really glad how it turned out, actually. My first jump I didn’t clear, and I was a little nervous. My second one was way better.”
Garcia’s height of 6 feet, 7.25 inches at the District 2 Invitational had stood as the best jump in any class this season before Moller obliterated it by more than 2.5 inches.
After he converted 6-10, Moller put the bar at 7 feet, 0.25 inches. He knew the state record was 7 feet, so why not try? He very nearly made it on his final attempt.
Now he’ll set his sights on the next level, where more records may well await. UCCS’ current outdoor record is 2.15 meters (7.05 feet), or just about the mark Moller nearly cleared on his last try.
“I just think going into college that’s going to be a huge confidence boost, definitely,” Moller said. “I’m just excited to keep jumping.”
