Manitou Springs’ Mackinzy Wall wins 3A girls discus, sets state record

LAKEWOOD – As Mackinzy Wall watched her discus soar through the air at Jeffco Stadium, she recognized it was a strong throw. But Wall didn’t think it would shatter a record.

When the discus landed in the grass and staff measured the Manitou Springs senior’s heave, it surprised her. The board Thursday at the discus area read 147 feet, 9 inches, which surpassed The Classical Academy’s Hannah Carr’s mark of 143-9 set in 2014.

“I thought it was going to be 135 (feet). I thought it was going to be low,” Wall, the 3A state discus champion, said. “The first one is meant to be an easier throw and I was ready to get out there and go for it. I was excited and it was the first throw of my state season as a senior. So I was thinking that I may as well take it all in.”

Wall bullied the field all season in discus and finished first in 10 of her 11 appearances in the event. She reached a career-best mark of 144-3 at the John Tate Steel City Fast Track Invitational on April 3, which moved her to first in the state, regardless of class.

Despite her season-long excellence, Wall didn’t enter the event with any arrogance or assumption she’d earned the title.

“There are a lot of people here going through their journey and I’m going through mine, so even though I was seeded first, I still needed to continue to get better,” Wall said. “I had to focus on my own journey rather than focusing on everyone else and their journey.”

That path led Wall to a place of dominance, which was highlighted with her final throw. Wall’s sixth toss went 134-7, her fourth shortest distance of the season and worst – by her high standards – throw of the meet. Peak to Peak’s Riley Watson, who placed second, had her best throw measured at 124-2.

“This comes from working harder this year and knowing that I’m doing this for God,” Wall said. “He’s been a big part of my success and … it feels nice. It feels like I’ve earned it and I’ve worked hard for it. It feels nice to come out here and get first place and do what I hoped to do.”
