National Police Week: A Moment to Recognize Service and Dedication 

National Police Week is not just a moment of recognition, but a reminder that the safety and freedom we often take for granted are made possible by those willing to protect our communities from danger. 

Our law enforcement officers here in El Paso County understand that this is not an easy profession, especially when the public meticulously scrutinizes their actions. Combined with long, unpredictable hours and constant exposure to trauma, they often do not receive the appreciation they deserve.

The truth is, across Colorado’s Fifth Congressional District, the work of our law enforcement officers is defined by integrity and diligence, often carried out away from the spotlight, as they work to keep our neighborhoods safe. Our law enforcement personnel serve with professionalism and an unwavering commitment to our community.

Our local law enforcement has done an excellent job working alongside our partners at the federal, state, and local levels to ensure public safety across the Pikes Peak Region. Their leadership and commitment to public service are recognized across all our neighborhoods, and I have had the opportunity to observe their work through countless meetings, facility and equipment tours, graduations, award ceremonies, and ride-alongs. I’ve seen firsthand the dedication of law enforcement to public safety and willingness to consistently go above and beyond the call of duty.

Every ride-along I have done with our Sheriff’s Deputies or Police Officers has taught me something new. You never know what each shift entails. Sometimes you may show up on the worst day of someone’s life; the next shift may be slow. Either way, our law enforcement officers’ ability to stay calm and handle urgent situations is inspiring and shows that our community is well cared for.  

Yet sometimes a shift may be the last for some law enforcement officers, and that is the unfortunate risk they and their families sign up for when taking on the position.

On this National Police Week, let’s take the time to remember our fallen police officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty to protect our communities from harm. Their courage and dedication to public service and safety will never be forgotten, and we owe them and their families a debt of gratitude that can never be fully repaid.

We are fortunate enough here in El Paso County to have Sheriff’s Deputies and Police Officers who care deeply about our community and work every day to keep us safe. This National Police Week, keep that in mind.
