Avalanche could be making move to goalie Mackenzie Blackwood in Game 4

ST. PAUL, Minn. — For the first time this postseason, the Avalanche look like they will have a different starting goaltender.

Mackenzie Blackwood, who relieved Scott Wedgewood in the second period of Game 3, was in Colorado’s so-called starters net at morning skate on Monday, typically a sign he will get the call in Game 4 against the Minnesota Wild. When asked to confirm if he’s making a change, Bednar played it coy.

“Yeah, we’ll see. Possibly,” he said.

When pressed a bit more, Bednar wouldn’t budge, but did say Blackwood getting into some action in Game 3 could be beneficial for him.

“He’s looked sharp for us,” Bednar said prior to Monday’s 6 p.m. puck drop at Grand Casino Arena. “I’ve really liked his practices and the time that he’s spent on the ice with Jussi, I’m getting good reports. Like I said at the start of the playoffs, we’re probably going to need both guys. It’s how we ran all year and we have confidence in both guys. I think Mackenzie is ready to play. He wants the net.”

Wedgewood has started all seven Avalanche postseason games, so this would be Blackwood’s first start. The 29-year-old Blackwood started all seven games against the Dallas Stars last postseason, posting a .892 save percentage.

Wedgewood played lights out in a sweep of the Los Angeles Kings but has had his struggles against the Wild, posting an .860 save percentage this series. He was pulled in Game 3 after giving up three goals on 12 shots.

“‘Wedgie’ was playing hard. Maybe he looked a little too aggressive on a couple of those,” Bednar said after the game.

The potential goaltending change isn’t the only possible lineup swap the Avalanche could make. Josh Manson, who hasn’t played since suffering an upper-body injury on April 23, took part in morning skate and was one of the first players off the ice, usually a sign a player is ready to enter the lineup.

When asked if Manson would play, Bednar again played things close to the vest.

“Manson is available for tonight,” he said.

Joel Kiviranta is another possibility to enter the lineup, although there won’t be confirmation of that until the Avalanche hit the ice for warmups. Kiviranta hasn’t played since April 21.
