Colorado Springs police have arrested a suspect in a November shooting that nearly killed a woman after a bullet pierced her chest, narrowly missing her heart.

Chase Edwards, 25, was arrested in late February after months of investigation by the police, according to court records. He faces three counts of attempted first-degree murder and one count of first-degree assault.

The woman, now 23, told investigators that she believes the incident was in retaliation for an accidental shooting involving her boyfriend, who was also there during the shooting. She said her boyfriend accidentally shot at a person. That person and Edwards allegedly have affiliations with a Cañon City group called the “Duck Park Gang,” according to Edwards’ arrest papers.

Leading up to the shooting, police say Edwards was driving a Cadillac with dark tinted windows and followed the woman and her two friends in their car after they left a car meet in Colorado Springs.

The three noticed they were being followed by two suspicious cars, the Cadillac and a Toyota RAV4. In an effort to evade them, they raced down North Academy Boulevard by The Citadel, hopping curbs into the mall’s parking lot before ending up at the Citadel Village apartment complex, the woman previously told The Gazette.

That’s when at least three shots rang out. One of them pierced through the front windshield and struck the woman in the chest. Witness testimony and handguns recovered in the Cadillac led police to believe that Edwards was the person who shot and hit the woman, according to the arrest papers.

The woman told investigators that she was “certain” another person, a juvenile also allegedly connected to the gang, was also involved in the shooting. It’s unclear if the authorities have arrested the juvenile.

Edwards waived his preliminary hearing Wednesday. The hearings are designed for a judge to determine whether there’s enough probable cause for the case to proceed.

He is being held at the El Paso County jail on a $50,000 bond and is expected to enter a plea at an arraignment scheduled for July 1, records show.
