As summer approaches, families across Colorado Springs begin searching for programs that offer more than just childcare, places where their children can grow, learn, and feel supported. This year, the Salvation Army Colorado Springs Corps is expanding its efforts to do exactly that through the 2026 Red Shield Summer Day Camp.

Running from May 28 through August 7, the Red Shield Summer Day Camp is a faith-based program designed for students entering kindergarten through 9th grade. Open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (closed July 3), the camp provides a structured, safe, and enriching environment during the summer months, when many families need it most.

Located at 908 Yuma Street, the program blends fun and purpose through a mix of educational activities, spiritual development, and memorable field trips both on and off site. With limited spots available, organizers are encouraging families to act quickly.

“The mission for the Red Shield program is to provide a safe, nurturing space, where children and families thrive through the love of Jesus, quality care, educational enrichment, and community connection,” said Iris Saldamando, program contact and Red Shield program manager.

The camp is designed to be accessible and family friendly. USDA-supported breakfast, lunch, and snacks are provided daily, ensuring every child is nourished and ready to participate. Flexible pricing options include a $60 daily drop-in rate or $2,600 for the full summer, with a 10% military discount and an additional 10% discount for families enrolling three or more children.

For many families, the impact of the program goes beyond convenience. One returning parent shared, “Before finding Red Shield, we struggled to find a program where our kids felt truly welcomed. Now, they look forward to going every day. They’ve made friends, grown in confidence, and come home excited about what they learned.” Community leaders say programs like Red Shield are essential, not only for working parents, but for building stronger neighborhoods and community. By combining recreation with character-building and faith-based guidance, the camp aims to create lasting positive outcomes for local youth.

In addition to enrolling children, community members also can support the program through donations.
