Numerous school districts across the Pikes Peak region decided to alter their schedules for Wednesday as a rain-snow mix hit the Colorado Springs area.

Academy District 20, District 49, Lewis-Palmer District 38, Calhan District RJ-1 and Pikes Peak BOCES East were among those to first cancel Wednesday classes. Banning Lewis Academy, CIVA Charter High School, Grand Peak Academy, Liberty Tree Academy, Pikes Peak School of Expedited Learning also canceled classes.

Other school districts – including but not limited to Colorado Springs D-11, Manitou Springs D-14, Widefield D-3 and Fountain-Fort Carson D-8 – are on two-hour delayed starts.

Northern El Paso County is under a winter storm warning until Wednesday 6 p.m., according to the National Weather Service in Pueblo. Heavy snow is expected, with total snow accumulations of 5 to 10 inches. Roads are expected to become slick and hazardous, especially over Monument Hill.

The county will be under a freeze warning starting midnight Wednesday until 8 a.m. Thursday. The Weather Service expects subfreezing temperatures in the mid-20s in central and southeast Colorado. The low temperatures may kill crops and could damage outdoor plumbing, the Weather Service warned.
