In a May 4 social media post, Upper Pine River Fire Protection noted that a local automobile crash that is believed to have occurred on May 1 has been called “both a tragedy and a miracle” – a tragedy as two adults were killed, but a miracle as a 5-year-old child passenger was found alive roughly 30 hours after the suspected time of the crash.

According to Colorado State Patrol, the crash involved a blue Chevrolet S10 traveling off the side of Highway 160 in southwest Colorado near Bayfield, rolling an unknown number of times and landing on its roof. It’s believed that the crash took place at about 6 a.m. on May 1, though the crash wasn’t discovered until the following day as the vehicle wasn’t visible from the highway.

Colorado State Patrol responded to a report of the crash at about 12:35 p.m. on May 2. Per a press release on the matter, the driver was identified as 25-year-old Devante Griffin and the adult passenger was identified as 24-year-old Klariza Tarango – both of Farmington and found deceased at the scene. The 5-year-old girl who was also a passenger was taken to an area hospital for treatment of injuries, but has since been released.

Per Colorado State Patrol, excessive speed and impairment are not being investigated as factors in the crash at this time. No charges are expected to be filed in this case.

“It weighs heavily not only on our crews but for the family and the public who have suffered a loss, expressed their condolences, and offered their prayers,” reads the social media post from Upper Pine River Fire Protection. The agency’s post also reminded the public that a car and booster seat safety class is on the calendar, scheduled for early June.
